Abstract |
Malaclemys terrapin 39 diamondback terrapins were captured in Florida, USA, in the spring of 1997 and 1998. Total and faecal coliform bacteria were isolated from the cloaca and faeces of the terrapins. The majority of samples contained faecal coliforms. Escherichia coli was the predominant faecal coliform species isolated, and Salmonella spp. were isolated from 2 of 39 terrapins. Faecal coliform numbers are used to regulate shellfish harvests, and diamondback terrapins inhabit the brackish-water habitats where oyster beds are found; therefore, these findings have implications for the efficacy of current regulatory parameters in shellfishing waters.
