Abstract
Emys orbicularis Mauremys leprosa Terrapins in Spain are seriously endangered in most of their area of distribution. In Castile and León, however, there are hardly any studies dealing with their conservation status. During 2006 an agreement has been signed between the Castilla and León government and the University of Salamanca to assess the terrapin population status in the region. This project will be carried out from 2006 to 2009. Its main objectives are: a) To determine species distribution in Castile and León (10x10 UTM grids); b) To study the structure of several populations of both species; c) To determine the existence and distribution of different subspecies or genetic variations; d) To catalogue the potential endangered status of the species in the region; e) To determine the presence of exotic terrapins and to propose measures to control or remove them; f) To propose specific measures and actions to protect native species both at a scientific, governmental and educational level. Together with the introduction and objective description we present the first results of the project for the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora. species.
