Abstract |
Testudinidae The island of Minorca still has good populations of Hermann’s tortoise Testudo hermanni hermanni, which have been little studied until now, possibly due to the fact that it is an introduced species in the Balearic Islands. In order to determine the situation in Minorca, we studied four different populations between 2003 and 2005. Most of the parameters have shown consistent results during the three-year study. The body size of males and females did not vary between years in a single population, but it did so between populations. The sex-ratio in each population has not been significantly different to the parity between sexes (1:1). The rate of juveniles with respect to the number of sub-adult and adult individuals has significantly varied. The age of sexual maturity varied between populations. Density may vary between 10 and 50 tortoises/has. On the basis of this preliminary approach to knowledge of the Hermann’s tortoise in Minorca, we have been able to determine that these populations seem to be well conserved, and that they are characterized by a balanced sex-ratio and a high to very high density of individuals. On the other hand, it is important to outline the differences in body size and juvenile production between populations, which imply great demographic differences between populations.
