Abstract |
Testudo hermanni Testudinidae As part of a five-year study of a population of Testudo hermanni hermanni in southern France, I present here an account of six females radiotracked from May to October 1994. Two strategies were observed. Half of them migrated to a field near the river for the summer where as the other restricted their movements to areas of less than an hectare within shrubland, close to where I first encountered them. I confirmed these divergent trends in patterns of movement through capture-marked-recapture data in the population. These movements pose consequences for the conservation of the species. I offer also a brief overview on two major issues for the French terrestrial tortoise: why its conservation has become so popular and which factors threaten the species.
