Abstract |
Testudinidae Since 1988 the author breeds Geochelone carbonaria annually, producing a total of 84 specimens until 2000. In 1998 and 1999 third generation specimens were born. Food consists of endive, tomato, banana, supplemented with soaked cat food. Calcium and vitamin supplements are always added. Copulations always take place between May and November. Between September and April, the females usually produce 4 clutches consisting of 2-5 eggs. Almost all fertile eggs hatch. Approximately 25% of the eggs is fertile. The eggs are being incubated at 30°C. At this temperature both male and female offspring occurs. So far, more females than males have been born. A combination of a yellow female and a red male always yielded red offspring. Two females that had been hatched from this combination also produced a red hatchling, when combined with a red male. The colour red appears to be a dominant factor in G. carbonaria. Hatchlings receive the same diet as the adult specimens. The adults are being kept on wood chips. The juveniles are housed on a bedding consisting of wood shavings. In order to prevent pyramiding, the soil material is sprayed twice weekly.
