Abstract |
Authors of captive breeding reports on tortoises frequently argue that eggs that did not hatch were not fertile. However, it is very hard to determine the difference between an egg being unfertile, and other causes of failing development. For instance, several articles have addressed diapause in tortoises, and a possible necessity to imitate a period of unfavourable incubation conditions to break diapause thereafter. In the wild, it has even been found that eggs produced at different moments during the egg laying season may possess different diapause-related characteristics. The author recommends that tortoise breeders first attempt different incubation methods, in order to reject possible diapause-related causes for lack of embryonic development.
