Abstract |
Geochelone yniphora Testudinidae The Madagascar tortoise Geochelone yniphora is apparently restricted in distribution to isolated patches of bamboo forest in the vicinity of Baly Bay, north-western Madagascar. A distribution map of all known locations, both in the wild and in captivity is presented, and the major factors influencing the continued survival of G. yniphora are examined. These comprise: habitat modification, as a result of frequent burning of grassland to provide new growth for cattle; a demand for tortoises as pets and as food; and predation of eggs and hatchlings. Conservation measures are recommended and their implementation discussed. Added by: Admin Last edited by: Beate Pfau |
