Abstract |
Emydoidea blandingii Habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation caused by the pressures of urbanization are responsible for the decline of many aquatic turtle species in the United States. Populations surviving the wake of these threats often become restricted to small isolated habitat patches. For relatively long-lived turtle species, although adults can persist for decades, the overall population continues to decline due to a failure of reproduction and recruitment. Blanding’s turtles were once common throughout much of the northern two-thirds of Illinois but populations have rapidly declined with the loss of suitable wetland habitat due to urbanization. Pursuant to this decline, in 1998 E. blandingii was listed as threatened in Illinois. Since 1988, long-term capture/recapture techniques have been employed at protected wetland complex in the lower Des Plaines River valley. Here we report on population structure, size, sex ratios, and diet. We also provide recommendations for additional studies that are needed to adequately manage the DPR population.
