Abstract |
The North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Turtle Rescue Team (TRT) is a student run organization under the direction of Dr. Greg Lewbart VMD, MS, Dipl. ACZM that has been treating chelonian wildlife for more than a decade. TRT typically treats 300 or more native chelonian patients a year for a variety of ailments including: vehicular trauma, canine trauma, aural abscesses, infection, myiasis, etc.. In January 2002, students, residents, and faculty associated with TRT participated with the TSA confiscation in Ft. Pierce, Florida. The following presentation is a summary of lessons learned from working with Cuora amboinensis, Orlitia borniensis, Heosemys spinosa, and Carettochelys insculpta over a three year period. Techniques such as esophagostomy tube placement, wound management, diet, fish hook removal, quarantine measures, and trauma medicine will be examined.
