Abstract |
Small numbers of the critically endangered Arakan forest, Heosemys depressa, have become available for captive management over the last decade. While proving relatively easy to establish, until 2007, the only captive reproduction occurred at Zoo Atlanta and in a private collection also in Atlanta. We discuss husbandry practices and behavioral observations of adults and juveniles, and comment on reproduction and incubation. With wild populations still poorly known, and the threat of commercial and local consumption still present, the establishment of a captive breeding program remains a priority in the preservation of this species.
