Abstract |
Following the success of an alligator snapping turtle captive propagation program in Oklahoma, identification of suitable release sites is the next step in the reintroduction process. Baseline surveys were conducted at 67 sites throughout eastern Oklahoma between 1997 and 2000. Potential release sites were selected based on 5 criteria: 1) historic presence of alligator snapping turtles, 2) no known current presence of alligator snapping turtles, 3) extinction factors known and eliminated, 4) current habitat quality, and 5) health of the present turtle community. Sites were then ranked, with regions meeting all five criteria receiving the highest priority. The process used for determining release sites also aided in identification of areas in need of additional surveys and/or mitigation of threats, and additional surveys of highly ranked sites prior to release of turtles is planned. In addition, interstate collaborations have been initiated to increase the number of potential sites available for future repatriation efforts.
