Abstract |
Testudinidae Chelonian reproduction constitutes an integral part of the captive management of many species. As more species are established in captive environments, a thorough understanding of their reproductive tract health status is essential for successful reproduction. Reproduction can be adversely affected by improper nutrition, husbandry mismanagement, and various disease processes. Any systemic illness can adversely affect the integrity of the reproductive tract. Furthermore, some conditions (such as septicemia) can lead to scaring and permanent damage. Because of their anatomy, the chelonian reproductive tract can be difficult to evaluate. Radiography, ultrasonography, and endoscopy are some of the techniques that allow for a thorough assessment of the chelonian reproductive tract. At Zoo Atlanta we have been performing reproductive tract assessments on a on a variety of chelonian species. In this talk we will describe our findings and will share or results working on Manouria impressa.
