Abstract |
To obtain reliable data on the current situation of Emys orbicularis in the Salentine peninsula (= Salento, South Apulia, Italy), 15 wetlands along the Adriatic and Ionic coasts were surveyed. E. orbicularis was recorded in 13 sites. However, reproduction was confirmed only for six populations. Pond turtle populations are rapidly declining in the study area and facing extinction in the near future. Between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, the wetlands of the Salentine peninsula were subjected to great environmental changes, radically transforming the landscape. These alterations mainly included large-scale land reclamation projects and, more recently, the intense and sometimes unauthorized urbanization of the coast for tourism, canalizing of creeks, the alteration of the sand dune system, coastal withdrawal, and the increasing exploitation of ground-water resources. These factors destroyed more than 90% of suitable habitats for E. orbicularis. A particular cause of concern is the presence of reproducing red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) at three sites. At present, only two Salentine E. orbicularis populations can be considered as sufficiently protected. To avoid the extinction of further populations, special protection zones and a captive breeding and reintroduction programme are suggested.
