Abstract |
Testudinidae Nematoda Five of seven terrestrial tortoises (Testudo horsfieldi) necropsied were found to be infected with pinworms of 6 species in 2 genera : Mehdiella uncinata, M. microstoma, Tachygonetria conica, T. microlaimus, T. dentata, T. longicollis. In two tortoises harboring numerous pinworms, serious enteritis was observed. The lamina propria and mucosal layer of the large intestines were infestrated by many pinworma. It is suggested that the pinworm infection is one of the major causes of death of the tortoises.
