Abstract |
The effects of fire and the drought upon the population structure of Kinosternon scorpioides is reported in the "Refugio Nacional de Fauna of Silvestre Rafael Lucas Rodriguez Caballero" located at Palo Verde National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The number of Kinosternon scorpioides of the sampling was 206. Within the dead turtles (n=164), 140 (85.36%) died through the effect of the fire in only three days and 24 (14.64%) during the rest of the year for other reasons (drought, sickness or depredation). Among the tortoises that died because of burnings, 44.08% were young ones, 37.63% were females and 18.27% males. The effects of the drought upon the tortoises are dehydration, suffocation and death because starvation within the ground cracked
