Abstract |
In this study we reported the occurrence of the freshwater turtle of the family Chelidae in the State of Paraná. We characterized some of their habitats, and summarized data from literature. The species reported were: Hydromedusa tectifera Cope 1869, which occurs from the coastal area up to 1120 meters height in the interior of the state. Platemys spixii Duméril et Bibron 1835, was found in the interior of the state between 800 to 1120 meters, most of the of specimen were found in of Rio Iguaçu basin. Phrynops williamsi Rhodin et Mittermeier 1983 occurs only in the basin of Rio Iguaçu in the south of the state. Phrynops geoffroanus (Schweigger, 1814) was found in the basins of the rivers Paraná, Paranapanema, Tibagi and Cinzas, north of the state, as well in the basin of Rio Iguaçu. All these species occupy a great variety of aquatic environments, and plant formations, as well as areas disturbed by antropic action such as polluted rivers and fragments of rivers modified by the construction of hydroelectric power plans. The center and the northwest of the State of Paraná have had low record of specimens due to the lack of research institutions on the regions; and a small collectin effort developed. The basin of Rio Iguaçu is better represented in number of specimens, due to easy access for the research institutions, and environmental survey done along this basin.
