Abstract |
Growth of mud turtles, Kinosternon subrubrum, from throughout Florida was studied. Plastral growth is more rapid in juveniles and slows once maturity is reached, but is not as affected by the attainment of maturity as it is in emydid turtles. Females have longer plastrons while males have longer carapaces. Florida K. subrubrum show external sexual characters earlier and may mature faster and grow larger than those from more northern localities. This is probably due to longer annual growing seasons.
