A survey of the freshwater turtles in Jianfengling Nature Reserve was conducted from March to April of 2005 through interview and field survey.Plots were sampled in the mountain streams of the nature reserve,with elevations ranging 300-(1 000 m).A total of 443 plots were sampled in five representative study areas.A cage baited with rotten beef was used to catch turtles at each plot.During the survey,1 Pyxidea mouhotii,2 Sacalia quadriocellata,8 Platysternon megacephalum were caught during 2?215 cage-days. Cuora galbinifrons, C.trifasciata, Pelodiscus sinensis, Palea steindachneri are also confirmed to distribute in Jianfengling Nature Reserve by interview. It is found that at least seven turtle species belonging to two families are in Jianfengling Nature Reserve,representing 60% of the Hainan's 12 freshwater turtle species,of which four are new records in Jianfengling,including C.trifasciata,P.mouhotii,S.quadriocellata,and P.steindachneri.1 is critically endangered,5 endangered,1 vulnerable,and 2 are designated as grade key state-protected species in China according to the China Red Data Book of Endangered Animals: Amphibia and Reptilia.The population densities of freshwater turtles are rather low due to poaching.It is necessary to take immediate action to protect freshwater turtles in Jianfengling Nature Reserve.
